Data analysis and organization of data is an important concept for students. In order to be able to make decisions about the best method to represent data, students need to have an understanding of a variety of methods for displaying data. Students need to recognize the purpose of a line plot and then begin to utilize their understanding of fractions to interpret line plots. It is important that students have an understanding of unit fractions and are able to order unit fractions from least to greatest if they are to properly create a line plot.
These tasks allow students to explore line plots at an appropriate readiness level. The goal is that students will be able to represent fractional measures on a line plot but not all students are ready to do this. These tiered tasks meet students at their current readiness level and progress them through developing a deeper understanding of data display and analysis.
