My math lessons focus on student engagement and participation. I focus on developing conceptual understanding using manipulatives, specific language and activities. My lesson plans also include differientiated tasks that cater to the varying levels in the classroom.
1) To understand the relationship between place values both in decimal and whole numbers
2) To develop a concrete understanding of the sizes of large and small numbers
This is a crucial foundational skill for all future level of mathematics. We often assume students have conceptual understanding of place value since it is taught in early grades, but I have found many middle school students do not in fact have any conceptual understanding of our place value system at all.
