This unit begins with students working in collaborative groups researching three parts of Reconstruction. Each group will create a poster highlighting the specific features of part 1,2 or 3 of Reconstruction.
Part 1 of Reconstruction includes the initial easy terms for re-admittance offered to Southern states which will lead to Black Codes. Part two is known as Radical or Military Reconstruction where the Union army is sent down into the 5 military districts established in the south in order protect the rights of freed blacks who now become actively involved in the voting process with startling results. And finally Reconstruction ends with the election of Rutherford B. Hayes who agrees to remove the military from the south in exchange for Democratic support which allows him to win a disputed presidential election.
This is followed by an 18 slide power point presentation that checks for understanding.
The concluding phase of this activity involves each group analyzing a series of 8 political cartoons from the 1800s depicting specific issues, events or basic facts related to one of the three parts of Reconstruction. Students must explain and justify which cartoon relates to which part of Reconstruction.
This package includes Reconstruction worksheet, 18 slide power point aligned with the worksheet and reproducible PDFs of 8 political cartoons accompanied with detailed descriptions. A suggested answers sheet is also included.
