Understanding volume as a measurement is a challenge for many students. They need to first explore the concept of volume using a variety of real-world models and pictorial representations. Students need to develop strategies for determining volume based on these concrete representations.
This task provides a pre-assessment for teachers to use to determine students’ current understanding of volume and use the results to group students into appropriate readiness groups. Based on their needs students will be given the opportunity to further explore volume using concrete representations or to examine the volume of a variety of rectangular prisms that will lead students to make generalizations about volume and ultimately develop their own formula for finding volume.
