Interactive “Understanding a Food Label Flip Book”
Learning how to read a food label is an important lesson in our Healthy vs. Unhealthy Food unit. I feel that it is very important that students understand the importance of nutrition labels, and that they tell you what’s inside the food you are eating and list its parts.
Before I created this flipbook, I had the students examine real life examples of food labels. Each student was given a food label and they glued it into their interactive Science notebooks. Then, as a class we drew arrows and wrote brief notes about each category. After, I walked around and noticed that the students notes were ALL over the place. I HAD to think of a better way for the students to record notes about each category and still have a visual.
SO that is why I created this interactive food label where students could put it together and then flip the categories open and have rows to record important facts.
I used the site http://kidshealth.org/en/kids/labels.html# to help guide my lesson on food labels. This site provided me with a great informational video that covered: reading food labels, understanding food labels, and comparing food labels.
Together, the students and I, watched the video. I would pause the video through out and the students and I would talk about each category. We recorded notes as we went along.
