In this genre study, students will look at a single “topic” through the lens of 4 different genres. These genres are historically the focus of the English 1 STAAR test. The station "tasks" are taken directly from the English 1 TEKS and an extensive English 1 TEKS study. Students are given an essential question to guide their thinking as they progress through each station. This enables them to see the connection between the topic, genres, and theme. The genres covered are fiction, expository, poetry and literary non-fiction. The teacher will pick the topic, essential question, and texts for the stations. Before starting the review stations, make sure your students understand the difference between a topic and theme. Each genre has 4 stations and should take an entire 55 minute period or may require more time. There are specific directions before each genre station. A sample topic, essential question and text are provided.
