Make learning visible in your classroom with this Australian Curriculum aligned 'bump it up wall' pack. As part of the literacy progressions, 'Understanding texts' describes how a student will become increasingly proficient in their reading and viewing skills of decoding, using, interacting with, analysing and evaluating texts so that they can build meaning of a variety of text. Students become aware of their next learning step and are able to refer to the posters or student achievement record to see their next move. Easy to use and caters for all year levels.
In this resource the use of the word 'text' refers to and includes: components of print, image, sound, animated movements and symbolic representations. This sub-element of reading and viewing is organised into three sections: comprehension, processes and vocabulary. The complexity of text referred to includes four levels, gradually getting harder as the levels progress: simple, predictable, moderately complex and sophisticated. The scope of texts students need to be able to work with to be successful in the Foundation to Year 10 Australian Curriculum learning areas are all included.
Included in this resource:
- 11 colour display posters. Each poster has relevant information for the student to obtain that level. For the particular skill of 'understanding text', students focus on comprehension, processes and vocabulary. Please note that level one does not have a 'processes' element. Wording is written in terms that students will become familiar with the more they use the resource. Each checklist in the level begins with "I am learning to".
- A teacher record book. All levels are set out in an easy to read table to allow teachers to mark off where students are at. Each level checklist is on one page with space for 10 students (*except level 1 and 2 which are on the same page to save paper). A corresponding page is also included with space for a further 25 students. It is intended that these will be bound in a format with checklist on the right and students on the left. All 11 levels are included. 3 different covers are included for this book: full colour, low colour and black/white version.
- A student achievement record. It is intended for these pages to be printed as a booklet to allow students easy access to the skills throughout the year or during assessment times. I have included a skill checklist and a space to write how students will aim to achieve this skill. The 'achieved' column can be used to tick or date as needed. This booklet could be used during interviews, kept in portfolios for the year and passed on to the teacher for the students next year of schooling.
