This is a free video lesson for teaching what a Common Denominator is, what a Least Common Denominator is and why a common denominator is needed to add and subtract fractions. The lessons starts with a simple definition of a fraction, and then proceeds by pointing out why two fractions with different denominators cannot be added together directly. The lesson describes why denominators are not added as well as why and how to calculate equivalent fractions.

Simple examples using coins are included as well as detailed examples using fractional parts of candy bars.
