This 4 page document is a series of 4 tasks, that provide at first the definition of understatement and 3 specific examples. Task 2 requires students to find and explain their own examples of understatement from media they find. Task 3 requires the students to identify the use of understatement in a text. The example text is "A Raisin in the Sun", by Lorraine Hansberry. Lastly, the text requires the student to delve into synthesis-level learning by creating their own example of understatement.
This is designed to take one hour.
When I taught this, I made this document the template in google docs, and instructed my students to make a copy of it, and fill in the tables as they went along.
The main purpose of this assignment is to guide students to "distinguish what is directly stated in a text from what is really meant." Understatement is merely one strategy.
