In this lab, students will practice using Punnett Squares to predict the possible outcomes of crossing horse Mystic with horses Opie and Kitt Katt in an effort to produce a unicorn! This lab can be done online, or modified to be a hands-on practice if you made large squares and cut out matching genotypes for the boards. This download includes the lab report and the genotype riddles for students to identify the genotypes of the horses. Example: Dark eyes are dominant to light eyes. Opie has phenotypically dark eyes. His father was homozygous recessive and his mother was homozygous dominant. (Opie is heterozygous.) The analysis questions get the kids thinking about genetic modification, and the moral implications of performing such experiments on living things. This will get them thinking about the follow up topic of genetic engineering.
