This lab has gained quite a reputation. Every year students ask, "Are we going to make Unicorn Snot?".
This is a fun and educational experience that introduces students to polymers.
I hand the lab sheets out (laminating is a great idea!), set up a "supply depot" at a lab table and simply monitor/facilitate as students work through the investigation.
I warn students that the lab may go awry if they don't follow directions carefully! In truth, though, a little miss-measuring by novice hands will still produce a polymer!
Students complete this lab by answering a set of questions (there are two sets). One set is less time demanding and works great for interactive notebooking.
The second set includes a debate question that is certain to provoke an meaningful discussion!!!
At the end I have teams divide their "snot" and send it home in plastic snack bags labeled, " student name's SNOT".
A polymers explanation for students is included in this package.
This lab does NOT include a polymers explanation for the teacher as you are probably versed in this area if you are teaching this to your students.
