Unions are one of those polarizing issues where people either love or hate them (or have no idea what they are!). With that in mind, this lesson is designed to not only give students the vocabulary for discussing unions, but to also form their own opinions about them! They’ll even create their own vocabulary bumper stickers!
This engaging, student-centered lesson will teach your students a brief history of unions, several vocabulary terms, and give them the framework for researching the role unions should (or should not) play in our society today! After reading a brief history of unions and reading through 6 vocabulary terms (closed shop, collective bargaining, bread-and-butter unionism, union shop, right-to-work laws, and court injunctions), students will make 3 terms into opinionated, witty bumper stickers. Finally, students will research the pros and cons of unions, and then write a paragraph about the role unions should play in our society using evidence from their research.
What to Expect:
I teach this lesson in one period of 50-60 minutes. The lesson can easily be adjusted for shorter class periods.
