Students must use the times in the descriptions of the insect species to make a list of species from most ancient to most recent.
They must then place the species on the cladogram outline in order from most ancient to most recent using their list (they have notes in the table to assist them). They must then use the species’ descriptions to determine features that are shared among the insect (called synapomorphies and is a great introduction for this).
I love this lab activity because it is hands' on and uses simple drawings to represent the "big idea" of cladistics. Great lab for any junior high or high school age!
