An essential activity to prepare students for the daily onslaught of algebra to come in Physics! Use this activity to get students to solve algebraic equations for the variable (without plugging in any numbers).
This activity serves as an excellent warm-up for students who need a refresher in basic algebraic manipulation (and order of operations).
Students who train themselves to solve equations for the variable first make fewer mistakes in calculations during the year. Those students also tend to distill mathematical relationships more readily than students who plug in numbers before rearranging variables.
In addition, many mainstream physics assessments (NYS Regents, AP (I, II and C), SAT II) contain questions expressed solely in terms of variables, so students who are more practiced in solving for the variable first encounter almost no difficulty on those types of questions.
