A second grade math unit used to teach students about word problem types using place value, properties of operations, and drawings or objects. There are five different types of word problems included, and students can practice each type before learning about the next. A very valuable resource for this has been a free "word problem situations chart" which can be searched for online easily and found. I have found it helpful to teach children the kinds of word problems and then decide if the unknown number is start unknown, change unknown, or end unknown. Having made this vocabulary commonplace in my own classroom, our students are able to quickly identify what it is that they should do to solve a problem.
There are graphic organizers and notebook-style activities that can be used in any way you'd like - that's up to you. On our team of five teachers, we can use the same resource five different ways and believe that it's okay to do so!
Vocabulary is also included. Students are able to match vocabulary words with the definitions. These were words that have become a part of our daily math conversations in class, and it all began with the first days of school!
Morning work, which can be used as a lesson warm up, is included to work on fact fluency and using ten frames to model teen numbers, and students were also able to show a second way (preferably in my room - base ten blocks). This was used with 5 second grade classroom at the beginning of the school year, so that was a great starting point for our new second graders! It was about a 15-day unit for us from the pre-test to the post-test.
A pre-test and post-test are included so that you can see where students began with these skills and where they were able to end the unit following the teaching. It has been great for my students to graph their pre- and post-test scores because they LOVE to see their growth.
Specifically, 2nd grade common core math standards are addressed:
2.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems.
2.NBT.9 Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work using place value, properties of operations, and/or drawings or models.
As well as the fluency standard - 2.OA.B.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. At the end of 2nd grade, know all the sums of two one-digit numbers.
With RTI and intervention becoming more and more popular, this could have a place in both 1st grade (for enrichment) or 3rd grade (for continued practice of skill deficits).
