I use these spelling word game cards to help my students learn and review the spelling words from Unit 1.2 in Scott Foresman's Reading Street. They are great for partner or center work. There are pictures to help reinforce the spelling patterns and pattern portion of each word is in red font. The spelling patterns included are:

- dipthongs (sh, th)
- long a ("bossy e" / "magic e" / "silent e")
- long i ("bossy e" / "magic e" / "silent e")
- long o ("bossy e" / "magic e" / "silent e")
- long u ("bossy e" / "magic e" / "silent e")
- long e (e, ee)

In addition to the spelling cards, there are 2 high frequency words for each week's words.

When my students play in small groups, they place the cards face down between them. The first player picks the top card, reads it, then puts it on his/her forehead and spells it. If s/he reads and spells it correctly, s/he keeps it.

There are some fun bonus cards:
-Extra Turn (the player keeps the extra turn card and draws another)
-Change a Letter (the player picks a card and has to change one of its letters to make a new word)
-Double Down (the player picks 2 extra cards and has to read/spell BOTH cards correctly or return them both to the bottom of the pile)
-give a card (the player gives a card to a friend. If the friend reads/spells it correctly s/he gets to keep it. If not, the card is returned to the player who gave it away.
-Take a card (the player chooses a friend to "steal" a card from. The friend decides which card to give, and the player who takes the card has to read/spell it correctly, or return the card to his/her friend)
-Game Over

My kiddos love this game! I hope yours do, too!

Note: You can also take out the bonus cards and use these cards for classic games like Memory, Roll and Write, etc.
