This unit teaches two-digit addition and subtraction problems in a four-week unit. It will address the following Common Core standards:

2.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems.

2.NBT.5 Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies of place value, properties of addition or subtraction, and/or the relationship between addition or subtraction.

There are practice sheets for students to manipulate base ten block models to help them solve addition and subtraction problems. Later, they can draw their own models to solve the problems. They will work on problems that require them to compose tens in addition and decompose tens in subtraction, as well as problems that do not require composing and decomposing.

There are quizzes throughout the unit, as well as a pre-test and post-test to measure student learning at the end of the unit.

I also work with my students to check their work using the concept of inverse operations. This is not a main focus of the unit, but it is mentioned to start the unit. This is a great skill for students to transfer their knowledge of simple fact families to larger numbers.

This unit can work well in interevention or RTI groups: 1st grade (enrichment), 2nd grade (Tier 1 grade-level instruction) or 3rd grade (skill remediation).
