Learning the key scientific terminology associated with Area of Study One of Unit 3 Chemistry can be particularly challenging. Students are bombarded with an array of new vocabulary and are not only required to learn the definitions in a word perfect manner, but are also challenged to apply them to a variety of different situations.
Introducing 'Kick Me'. A way for students to learn key VCE terms and definitions in a fun and collaborative manner. To complete this activity, you will need twenty-two stickers (rectangular is best). On each sticker, write a key term that is provided on the solutions sheet. When students walk into the classroom, apply one of the stickers onto their back and here is where the game begins! Students read through the definitions on their worksheet and then find the students in the class with matching terms on their backs. On their sheet, students write down the term and the name of the student who had that particular term stuck on their back. Students can work together or independently, and receive immediate feedback on their understanding.
This activity incorporates the High Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS) of differentiation, collaborative learning, feedback and multiple exposures. It aligns with the VCAA key knowledge dot points under the headings of 'Obtaining energy from fuels' and 'Fuel choices'.
