Fun On the Way is meant to be just that - FUN!
It is my hope that the engaging activities in the units will help emerging readers reinforce skills that will help them become fluent, life long readers.
In Units 4, 5, and 6 there are many skills presented that are already being introduced in the classroom phonemic awareness program.
I use these activities following the Gradual Release of Responsibility research based best practice. I model the ideas many times and gradually release the responsibility for the work to the students. With differentiation in mind, this might happen at different times for different students. Many units have brand new ideas presented, so the gradual release may look different each day. This means that the activities can be done as direct instruction or as follow up independent work or work done at a Literacy Center.
This Unit starts a new idea that will be built on in upcoming units. It is a GIFTED Strategy: Comparing and Contrasting. This strategy helps all students stretch and grow. There will be slides with a large cat. The cat will have 3 words on him. The students must analyze all 3 words and justify why 1 word has to go...Which one doesn't belong and why? There could be more than one way to do that on the cards. One student might make a notice for one solution and another student notices that there is a second way to justify making a word go.
