Made famous by psychologist Carol Dweck, the growth mindset is more than just a belief in effort. There are a few key elements that must be included in any attempt to teach students to adopt this way of thinking, but once you do teach students how to grow their brains, the results will be astounding.
There is enough here for 16 to 23 days of teaching—a full month worth of growing your students’ confidence and skills. You will start off by introducing the brain science and the general concept of growth mindset with a non-fiction article, a pre-unit quiz, and a Tedtalk. After that, students will explore challenging texts that deal with themes of perseverence, grit, hard work, and some of the real-life consequences of a fixed mindset. The unit concludes with a personal essay unit in which students will write about a failure in their lives. Also included: a letter to parents explaining the science behind the theory and what they can do to help their students.
