A few years ago this unit began as an isolated video piece (Step Up-scene 8-What Do you want?) In this scene one of the main characters is asked why he does not dream. His answer broke my heart. He said “it is better not to want anything, that way if goes away, it doesn’t matter.” This quote was the answer to why many students do not “dream.” It saddened me to find that most of my students do not “dream” or have strategies to try to make dreams come true.
My challenge was to find a way to teach them how to “dream” through the use of expository media and text. The objective was to have students identify cause and effect relationships (to achieve dreams, actions are required)
A great end of the year unit to keep middle school students engaged, when they also have the skills and maturity to handle the content. High school students could handle this unit at any grade.
