Spice up teaching expository text structure with a student jigsaw, video clips and pictures to help students understand the different structures. Included in this bundle are links to text pieces and video clips. You will need YouTube access for students to locate video clips for their presentations.
Divide students into five groups, one for each pattern. In each group let students choose their role, for their class presentation. See enclosed calendar for time line.
After student presentations, give students a taste of U.S. History in the "Beyond" section. Many students no longer receive any history in grade school, so this may be their first introduction. My favorite clip for this section is "Bad Romance" done by Lady Gaga. While viewing this turn on the subtitles, as it will help the students understand better the character of Susan B. Anthony and Women's suffrage.
Finish the unit with the movie "Hoodwinked," which has great examples of all text patterns.
Unit includes a 35 page power point for Bell Work quotes and covers five text patterns: Definition, Sequence, Compare/Contrast, Cause/Effect and Problem/Solution.
Quiz is on line at Quia.com.
There additional instructional worksheets (for student jigsaw) I can send that are not included in the packet as they are copyrighted by someone else.
