One of the tools that I use the most frequently in my work with students is called a Unit Overview Sheet.
The purpose of the unit overview sheet is to detail the essential outcomes for a unit of study in kid friendly language. A unit overview sheet also gives students a place to reflect on their own levels of mastery, to record grades earned on classroom assignments, and to detail proof that they've mastered each individual standard covered during a unit.
Unit overview sheets become a tool for constant reflection and review over the course of our lessons. They also serve as a valuable communication tool, sharing essential information with parents and practitioners working beyond my classroom.
This is the unit overview sheet for my sixth grade science unit on the Lithosphere. It includes objectives related to the layers of the earth, the reasons for earthquakes and volcanoes, the action of the earth's tectonic plates at different boundary types, and the important role that soil plays in our lives.
