This Unit Plan is centralized on the theme of biological evolution and addresses the concepts of natural selection, common ancestry and diversity, adaptation, and biodiversity. This plan is aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards, specifically on HS-LS4 Biological Evolution: Unity and Diversity. This unit plan incorporates a wide variety of engaging and hands-on activities that strengthen conceptual understandings of evolution and natural selection. The instructional sequences in this plan are structured with the 5E learning cycle: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. This plan is also centered on a connecting phenomena: sexual selection. Three animals with unique characteristics driven by sexual selection were chosen to get students engaged and asking questions about the phenomena. This plan can be changed and adapted as needed. This unit plan was created as a final project for my Advanced Methods in Science Education course at the Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum program at OU.
