This unit plan explores retelling and recounting while learning about Healthy Eating.
This unit is an introduction to healthy eating, using Canada’s Food Guide as a starting point. Students will learn about the four food groups by reading different pieces of literature and will focus on retells. Different fiction and non-book resources will be used. This unit demonstrates balanced literacy, and has many opportunities to include technology. Students will also focus on writing recounts by having experiences that deal with healthy food. This unit incorporates expectations from the language curriculum.
This unit was designed to be at a late Grade 1 level. At this point in the year, the students are already comfortable with reading and writing. Also, if the unit is completed in the Spring, many foods needed to supplement this unit will be available locally.
