Unit name: Let's measure
Anticipated Duration of Unit: 12 lessons - 3 weeks
Culminating Activity: "Planning a Backyard" (see http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/perf_stands/n5atss.pdf )
The students were presented with the following scenario:
"I (teacher) would like to have student input when deciding how to organize the classroom.
The dimensions are 10m by 15m. You plan your ideal classroom and make a scale drawing of your plan for my review"
Students are given grid paper and asked to use a scale of 1cm = 1 m. They will work individually to plan a classroom, and to create a colour coded legend to identify different areas of the room. They are asked to calculate the area and perimeter of each area of the room, showing all their work.
They are also asked to calculate the cost of painting the walls are new colour, if a can of paint (1L) costs $25 and covers 10m2
( hint: the students will need to measure the height of the room).
