As Americans, we are unaware of the concept and experiences associated with freedom. In this country, freedom is highly valued and under-appreciated. As artists, we can help others be aware of the freedoms that they enjoy and might take for granted.
By incorporating visual culture into the unit, students will be able to tie their ideas and images into the modern culture. Students can learn to construct a better global understanding of freedom and how it relates to visual culture both in this country and in other countries. Students should also be aware of their personal meanings in a work of art. In doing so, they become empowered and learn to understand the world as well as their own personal relationship to it.
