Studying at a college or university is very demanding. It requires a high level of English proficiency. Students need developing skills of reading, writing, listening, speaking, field-specific vocabulary and more complex grammatical structures to deal with the need of academic language. Many ESL learners enter the universities with a high degree of communicative proficiency but they lack the proficiency that is needed for academic demands of university, and they encounter lots of problems and obstacles. Therefore, they need to develop the learning strategies and cognitive and metacognitive skills that are related to higher education. They should learn how to integrate, interpret, analyze, and synthesize information that is acquired from different sources, with a critical and analytical view.
