I have used these assignments with various levels of English 3. The active reading and reading check are good for making sure that students have read and understand the story. We discuss the story, and then I introduce the research paper.
This research paper asks students to evaluate the actions of the characters through their understanding of the story's historical context. They have four topics to choose from. I teach the basics of how to write a research paper (citations, etc) with this unit. The reason I like this particular assignment so much is that there is nothing like it on the Internet for students to be tempted to copy and paste from.
I have also included a rubric for the final drafts and various helpful links (to sites with information, a citation maker, writing tips, etc) for students to use.
