This project asks students to form a fictitious business selling duct tape pencil pouches. Students complete a variety of math problems calculating the cost to produce the pouches, cost of labor, determining profit, setting selling prices, and creating manufacturers suggested retail prices.
What math is involved?
-Finding area of a rectangle (decimal or fraction)
-Finding unit rate and unit price
-Using percent of a number to determine profit/cost
-Decimal and whole number computational skills

-PDF of student booklet (4 pages)
-PDF of answer key (4 pages plus 2 pages of instructional suggestions)
-PDF of directions on how to make pencil pouches (2 pages with step by step directions/pictures)
-PDF version of PowerPoint slides showing directions to make pencil pouch
-PowerPoint file showing directions to make pencil pouch
When printing student booklet and teacher booklet I double side and then book fold, stapling like a book. The cover is intentionally blank as I have students decorate it with the name of their business and their names as owners of the business. Students follow the booklet in order to form a mini business plan to determine the cost, profit, and suggested retail price of a duct tape pencil pouch. After students successfully complete the mathematics I allow them to create a duct tape pencil pouch.
