This is a complete lesson that addresses one of the toughest common core standards in 7th grade math. After completing this lesson, students will be able to answer questions involving unit rates, and proportional reasoning with complex fractions.
Addresses common core standards:
Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities.
Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems.
Lesson will first have students explore the problems by drawing a visual representation of the situation. This will build a deep understanding of the concept in the students. A power-point and aligned worksheet will walk students through this process step-by-step. Students will then move into setting up, and solving proportions involving fractions in the ratio. This lesson will allow students to develop a true understanding of the concept.
