Part performance task, part interactive notebook activity, and a whole lot of fun, Rockin' Unit Rates is a great way to explore unit rates. The activity includes instructions with images, activity pages, and an answer key.
I was inspired to create this lesson after visiting a book store. The store had 45 records on sale for $0.20 per record. I wondered how many revolutions a record would make to play a song, and I thought my students would enjoy finding out about their favorite songs. Interestingly, there has been a resurgence in vinyl record sales. To prepare for this lesson, I searched YouTube for a video that shows how vinyl records are made. After showing students the video, I asked students to find out the playing times of their favorite songs. Then, I asked them to calculate the number of revolutions a vinyl record would make if it played their favorite song.
