Description

This unit rates card game is modeled after the traditional card game, "Old Maid." Students play "Old Math Guy" in groups of 4-5. Students will demonstrate their ability to simplify unit rates by matching cards with rates represented as miles per hour, $ per hour, and $ per ounce with the equivalent unit rate. Fractions and decimals are used in both the numerator and denominator. This activity requires basic fraction division, and use of scrap paper may be appropriate for your class.

Included:

-38 cards (17 pairs)

-Old Math Guy (both color and black and white version) included

-Answer key

-Teacher's Guide with CCSS, objectives, materials, and procedure

Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions, including ratios of lengths, areas and other quantities measured in like or different units. For example, if a person walks 1/2 mile in each 1/4 hour, compute the unit rate as the complex fraction ½/¼ miles per hour, equivalently 2 miles per hour.
