I used to get frustrated when students spent an entire period reviewing before a test without doing a single ounce of self-reflection. And then I realized that they might not know how! This study guide is designed to help students actively reflect on what they know, understand, and can do as they are working. By the end of the activity, they should know exactly what they need to work on before an assessment.
This free Unit Study Guide is designed to be used with the review problems that you already use. For best results, I recommend organizing the review problems by learning target or standard. Then you can add problem numbers to this study guide.
Learning Target 1: I can simplify square roots. Questions #1-5
On the second page, you can add a list of steps for students to complete once they’ve determined what learning targets or standards they need to work on. I like to have extra worksheets, Quizlets, Kahoots, and Khan Academy practice available for each learning target so students can select the review materials that they like.
After a few units using this Study Guide, students will get in the habit of always self-assessing their understanding as they review. I’ve seen a big improvement in my students’ metacognitive skills, and I hope you start to see students thinking about their thinking too!
