This is a 4-page unit test
for a typical 8th – 10th Grade
biology unit on evolution and natural selection
This test is designed to take the average science student 40 – 50 minutes
All of my tests follow a similar format and are divided into the 3 sections
Part A: Subject Knowledge:
(~ 50% of the Test)
- Questions that involve simple recall of facts from the unit
- Types of questions include modified true/false, fill in the blanks, definitions, summary tables, labeling, short answer
Part B: Science Skills:
(~ 35% of the Test)
- Questions that involve performing particular skill(s) taught during the unit
- Types of questions include graphing, interpreting data, word problems, balancing equations, longer answer
Part C: Concept Application:
(~ 15% of the Test)
- Questions that involve using prior knowledge and applying it to a brand new situation or problem
- Types of questions include writing experiment plans, interpreting new data, short essay
1. Linked to the Unit Review Document
All of my tests build on the matching Unit Review
document that I typically hand out three to five days before the test. Some test questions are similar to the review questions and some questions are direct copies! Check the section below for the corresponding unit review for this test.
2. Student-Directed Post-Test Analysis
All of my tests feature a Post-Test Analysis
box on the first page. After receiving their graded test with the overall score, students are then instructed to calculate their % score for each of the 3 sections listed above. This allows students, parents, and teachers to breakdown student performance into (1) knowledge recall; (2) skill mastery; and (3) applying knowledge. There is usually a place for a parent signature, if desired.
3. Hidden Instruction for Bonus Points
All of my tests contain a hidden instruction
that rewards students who read the test carefully and follow instructions with bonus points. For example, there may be a hidden instruction at the end of a word problem that says, “Draw a happy face to the left of your name for one bonus point”. In my experience, students love to search for these on my tests, as it is a quick and clear reward not based on extra subject knowledge but good work habits. At the same time, it encourages students to read the test carefully. Everyone benefits!
4. Complete Answer Key
All of my tests feature a complete key that can be used to grade but also to show to students after they receive their graded test papers back. My answer keys are designed to be specific, but offer grading flexibility on longer answers. Since the test document is a Word file (.docx), the answer key is fully customizable if you wish to make it match your own curriculum more closely.
