Product Description
This is a 4-page unit test for a typical 8th Grade physics unit on thermal energy (heat and temperature).

This test is designed to take the average science student 35-45 minutes to complete.

All of my tests follow a similar format and are divided into the 3 sections summarized below.

Part A: Subject Knowledge: (~ 60% of the Test)

- Questions that involve simple recall of facts from the unit
- Types of questions include modified true/false, fill in the blanks, definitions, summary tables, labeling, short answer

Part B: Science Skills: (~ 30% of the Test)

- Questions that involve performing particular skill(s) taught during the unit
- Types of questions include graphing, interpreting data, word problems, balancing equations, longer answer

Part C: Concept Application: (~ 10% of the Test)

- Questions that involve using prior knowledge and applying it to a brand-new situation or problem
- Types of questions include writing experiment plans, interpreting new data, short essay

- What is thermal energy
- Heat vs. temperature
- Temperature scales (Celsius, Kelvin, Fahrenheit)
- Thermal expansion
- Thermal contraction
- Thermal insulators and conductors
- Conduction
- Convection
- Heat transfer in everyday life (e.g. lava lamps, home insulation)

- This worksheet comes in 2 formats: a static PDF document and fully-editable WORD document
- Download the full PDF preview to see EXACTLY what you are getting!

Other Test Features:

Each of my tests are linked to two supporting documents. Firstly, a Unit Overview & Key Words document that I distribute at the start of the unit, which introduces main ideas, essential questions, skills, vocabulary terms, and relevant resources for the unit of study.

Secondly, a Unit Review document that I distribute 3-4 days before the test that helps students review the main concepts of the unit. The test is designed so that some questions are similar, if not exact copies, of questions found on the Unit Review. In this way, students that complete the Unit Review and check their answers should directly benefit from their efforts!

2. Student-Directed Post-Test Analysis Section

All of my tests feature a Post-Test Analysis box on the first page. After receiving their graded test with the overall score, students are then instructed to calculate their % score for each of the 3 sections listed above. This allows students, parents, and teachers to breakdown student performance into (1) content recall; (2) skill mastery; and (3) application of knowledge. There is also a designated place for a parent signature, if desired.

3. Hidden Instruction for Bonus Points!

Each of my tests contains a hidden instruction that rewards students who read the test carefully and follow instructions with 1 bonus point. For example, there may be a hidden instruction at the end of a word problem that says, “Draw a happy face to the left of your name for one bonus point”. In my experience, students love to search for these on my tests, as it is a quick and clear reward that is based on good test-taking habits. At the same time, it encourages students to read the test document thoroughly. Everyone benefits!

All of my tests feature a complete answer key that can be used to grade the test but also to show to students after they receive their graded test documents back. My answer keys are designed to be specific, but offer grading flexibility on longer answers. Since the test document is a Word file (.docx), the answer key is fully customizable if you wish to make it match your own curriculum more closely.
