I have used these nonfiction close reading passages with my own classes to foster more meaningful interactions with text and aide in content comprehension. I wrote these passages to specifically address Social Studies/ History standards for second and third grade. By reading, purposely rereading and engaging in the features of the text, students improve moth reading and comprehension skills, as well as interact with enriching content.
Each passage addresses on characteristic of a region of the United States. The included independent practice lets the students apply the learned content immediately.
Each passage includes review of map, chart and graph skills.
