Let's face it: first drafts are awful. That's why we teachers love talking about revision! Understanding paragraph unity is essential to making each paragraph clear, concise and focused. In my experience teaching writing, paragraph unity is one of the BEST things for students to look for in their revision. They quickly grasp the concept, and their paragraphs become much more polished. This lesson plan/student handout explains the concept of paragraph unity, outlines a sample paragraph, has 4 additional paragraphs for student practice, an answer key with explanations and two extension activities to help the students apply the concept to their own writing. This concept is not just for English class! One of the sample paragraphs is about a biome and the concept of paragraph unity is suitable for cross-curricular writing programs. Check out the preview file to read one paragraph and get a sense of the applied practice section of the handout.
