This is a student-centered, differentiated, skills-based quiz created to gauge students' level of comprehension when reading a novel or short story and to ensure they did the reading in the first place.
I found the traditional comp quizzes - who said this line? who wore the red hat? - did not reflect the skills I wanted my students to be using when reading, so I created this as an alternative.
In this I am also including my Active Reading Strategies - based largely on the instructional book "Strategies that Work". The quiz is essentially a way for me to ensure that not only are students reading and understanding, they are using the skills I am teaching.
The best part is it can be used for anything and be used over and over again.
It asks students to:
- Use context clues to decipher unfamiliar words they identified while reading
- Summarize the section of the novel that was assigned
- point out significant passages and why they think they are important
- and much more!
