This is a hyperdoc lesson that I created to teach the concept of the Universal Truth (theme) for poetry. I wanted students to see that a concept like love, might actually have several different themes depending on the author. This hyperdoc starts with the movie "UP" and the scene with the old man and his wife. Then it gives the students the ee cummings poem "i carry your heart with me" and finally it gives them the song by Death Cab for Cutie "I'll Follow You Into the Dark". The document walks the students through the analysis of each of these pieces. It also gives them a process to share with partners. Finally, they are asked to write a synthesis response that has them writing what the ultimate universal truth about love is using examples for each of these three pieces.
This takes at least one full day for the students to go through the hyperdoc and another day to do the writing unless you ask them to do it as homework.
I have a Google version of this lesson which I can send to you. Just send me a message.
