Product Description
Solving for a missing addend, minuend, or subtrahend in single-digit addition and subtraction number sentences is a mathematical concept that most 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders struggle with. Interestingly enough, most core math programs tend to gloss over this essential standard of Operations and Algebraic Thinking, simply directing students to "fill in the missing number." More often than not, students aren’t given any real resourceful or helpful ways on how to successfully do this. As a result, I created this resource as a way to share some of the strategies I’ve developed and used in teaching this very complex and difficult concept.

How It Works:
“Change the Sign!” is a 5-step process that students can use when looking for an unknown or missing number while adding and subtracting within single-digit number sentences.

Step 1: Look at the number sentence. Change the sign if you need to.
Step 2: Write the number you are adding or subtracting on both the right-hand and left-hand sides of the number sentence.
Step 3: Draw a straight line under all of the numbers.
Step 4: “Cross out” the numbers that are the same.
Step 5: Solve for the unknown or missing number. Write the number on the line or in the box.

Gentle Suggestions & Tips:
*All of the anchor charts included with this product have been produced in black & white. You may wish to copy these charts on brightly colored paper to give them a look that “pops!”
*After copying the charts using the colors of your choice, you may want to laminate them to ensure durability. The charts should be hung in a prominent area, such a math focus wall or on your whiteboard (even on your classroom door!), where students can see and utilize them as much as possible.
*Many of the anchor charts included in this product are very similar in wording and layout, so I have put together a handy anchor chart reference sheet for your convenience. These charts are located on pages 5 and 6 of this product.
*Student covers (there are 2) are included with this product should you want to make a “book” for your students.
*For your convenience, the student mini-book has been produced with 2 of the same pages on one sheet of paper as a paper and space saver. Just cut along the dark lines, put all of the pages together, (including the cover) and staple! NOTE: the exit tickets have been produced with “two to a page” as well.
*Five (5) concept extension printables and nine (9) exit tickets are also included. You may wish to use these in ways that will fit the needs of your students. Some suggestions include, but are not limited to: math centers, homework, bell/morning/seat work, during small groups, for RTI, as informal assessments, with ELL (English Language Learner) students, etc.
*NOTE: answer keys for the concept extension printables and all exit tickets are included for your convenience.

Happy "Changing the Sign!" :)
