It is exceptionally important that students understand the standards that they are learning and what the ‘big people’ words mean in ‘little people’ terms. Students take the standard that they are learning and dissect it into verbs and nouns/content area words. Then they come up with an "I can" statement based on what those words and the standard means. They tell what they learning, why, and how they will know they have learned the skill. This is based on proficiency scales, Marzano's Learning Model, and Personalized Learning.
