If the novel Unstoppable was part of your summer reading curriculum, this is the bundle for you. Included are two back-to-school response writing activities. One is a great baseline assessment to begin the year. This quick three-paragraph writing assignment measures students’ ability to generate, organize, and support their ideas with specific text evidence. The essay also measures student ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, and edit for conventions. In September, we all need to access the ability of incoming students, and this essay is a meaningful way to do so.
In addition, the postcard project is a great way to begin and end the year. This project challenges students to be unstoppable in their own lives. Students will identify a personal goal during the first week of school. On a postcard, students will record their goals and explain their plan for achieving it on a self-addressed postcard. During the last week of school, the postcards will be mailed home. Once students have received their cards, you can initiate a discussion about whether students were able to achieve their goals. It is a very rewarding experience for all.
