Teaching phonics in the upper elementary classroom might seem like a new idea. However, we have found that these foundational skills help students succeed in their reading and writing. We have compiled a set of ten 3-week units that cover a range of phonics and word-analysis concepts to help students master the Reading Foundations standard. This resource follows the same progression as the 5th grade Benchmark Advance reading series. While this set of activities work to complement instruction provided through this curriculum, it is in no way affiliated with Benchmark Education. We have also created the unit activities so that they stand alone without the textbook. These activities are perfect for whole class instruction, small-group RTI or reteaching, or extension work for students in lower grades.
Each unit consists of 3 topics. Each topic has a practice page. There is also an additional 4th activity for each unit that incorporates learning from two or more of the unit’s lessons. The units are divided as follows:
Unit 1: Short Vowels; Long Vowels; R-controlled Vowels
Unit 2: R-controlled Vowels, Closed Syllables, Open Syllables
Unit 3: Vowel-r Syllables, Vowel Teams, Consonant-le Syllables
Unit 4: Vowel-Consonant-e Syllables, Homographs, Sounds of oo
Unit 5: Noun Suffixes, Latin Roots, Homophones
Unit 6: Variant Vowel /o/, Noun Suffixes, Open and Hyphenated Compound Words
Unit 7: Final /ər/ and /əl/, Prefixes, Silent Letters
Unit 8: /ou/ and/oi/, Latin Roots, Adjective Suffixes
Unit 9: Irregular Past Tense Verbs, Inflectional Endings, Prefixes
Unit 10: Irregular Plurals, Science Roots, Prefixes
