The Jungle - Upton Sinclair Reading, Worksheet, and Interactive Notebook Page
This great resource for teaching the Industrial Revolution features a short excerpt from Upton Sinclair's The Jungle
which students read to gain an understanding of the atrocious conditions in America's meatpacking plants,
The excerpt graphically details the dangerous and unsanitary conditions that led to an uproar in America and eventual legislation like the pure Food and Drug Act.
A worksheet is also included with reading analysis and opinion questions for students to answer based on what they read. This is an excellent primary source to use as a reading because it's easy to understand and really captivates students with graphic imagery. An answer key for the worksheet is included for your convenience.
Finally, you also receive an interactive notebook style page in which students cut out a graphic organizer and describe what they read. This features some excellent primary source visuals to help students match what they read from Sinclair's The Jungle to the pictures they see.
