Chicago is a great city to analyze from the sociological perspective. This activity has 4 articles regarding some of the challenges the city is currently facing: gun violence, gentrification, and educational inequalities. The titles of the articles students will read are:
Article #1: Chicago’s Children Caught in the Crossfire
Article #2: Why Whole Foods is Moving into One of the Poorest Neighborhoods in Chicago
Article #3: 'White People Out' Message Wrong, But Frustrations Warranted: Pilsen Group
Article #4: Merger of Gold Coast School with Cabrini-Green School
Students will be asked to read one article individually and work in a group setting to apply sociological terms/theories to what they have read. They will report out to group members. Students are then asked to comment/question what they've heard from other students by writing their ideas on post-it notes and then doing a gallery walk to trigger conversation. The handout to help guide students to make clear sociological connections will help them tremendously. I have used this as a formal lesson while being observed by administrators and have gotten positive feedback. Students are very interested in the topic and the articles. The articles are accessible through a link that is available as a google doc included in this packet. If you enjoy the product, please give me a positive rating! Thank you!
