This is a 10 question multiple-choice quiz designed to assess students' general knowledge of Ursula K. Leguin's short story "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas." It can be used effectively as a morning quiz to start off the class, either as a homework check or as a introduction to discussion. If students have read the story carefully they should be able to answer the questions without difficulty with their books closed. Some questions do introduce some of the more challenging ideas in the story, such as the role of the child in the room. However, the quiz itself does not ask students to interpret these aspects with great detail. Instead, it asks questions that if answered correctly indicate the student has a sound knowledge of sequence of events and their general relationship to each other, as well as the general nature of the characters. There is nothing easy about this story, hence there is nothing easy about this quiz. It should be soon as a useful tool to ensure students understand the basics of this challenging and intriguing story before moving on to more sophisticated analyses.
