This is a template to analyze "Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" using the SOAPSTone method :) Sometimes, it seems to me, there is an acroynym for everything.... Lol. I know, I know, but SOAPStone is actually a really effective tool for helping students understand their reading. It asks the students to consider the speaker/writer, the occasion, the audience, the purpose, the subject matter, and the tone of a piece. Although this is typically an activity reserved for non-fiction, it can and should be applied to fictional pieces as well, especially when trying to target the tone of a work; tone is everything! And, all kids benefit from its organization. This is typically an AP strategy, but I think that's a bunch of hooie... I use it for all of my classes and all of my students; it takes a little longer with some classes versus others, but asking your students to contemplate these types of questions about their reading only enhances their criticial thinking and life skills. Use it however is best for you :)
