Formerly " English Under Construction: How English Has Changed." This resource includes a PowerPoint, worksheets, activity, lesson plan (complete with an activating strategy, Exit Ticket, etc.) and answer keys for Common Core L 11-12.1 and 11-12.1a.
The class will explore the different aspects of change in the English language- and whether we find those changes acceptable. The PowerPoint is easy to present and allows students to discuss how and why English has changed.
Students are encouraged to think about:
• words used today and in the past
• why languages might change
• quotes and use them as a springboard for discussion
• the evolution of correctness
• much more!
My favorite part of this lesson is the totally original (written by me!), student responses: Sally Student’s Response and Peter Pupil’s Response. Groups read and analyze Sally or Peter’s answer to the Essential Question early in the class. This allows students to see that this is a debated issue that can be answered more than one way. As a group, students compose a response to Sally and Peter. Agreeing or disagreeing will help students later when they are challenged to answer the EQ on their own.
The class will discuss “Reasons for Change,” including:
1- Contact with others,
2- New things!,
3- the media, etc.
All major points are included.
The PowerPoint also includes an activity on Semantic changes. Using Pejoration, Widening, Amelioration or Narrowing, students will “sign” their answer (silently and still fully engaged!) using sign language letters a, b, c, d on the PPT to show their guess how some words have changed.
This lesson is designed for 10th, 11th and 12th graders. It may be used at the college level or with Gifted and Talented 7th graders and above.
