The full title of this collection is "User-Friendly Rubrics for Every Occasion: 4-Point Rubrics for Writing Workshop, Literary Essays, Math Problem Solving, Habits of Character, Reflections, and General Use." Each rubric can be used for both formative and summative assessment and for both teacher scoring and student self-evaluation. The primary advantage of this collection is that every rubric operates under the same 4-point scale, in which "4" means "exceeds expectations," "3" means "meets expectations," "2" means 'below expectations," and "1" means "well below expectations." Using a consistent scale across disciplines makes it very easy for children to understand how their work and behavior will be assessed in the classroom. It also makes communicating with parents easier when all classwork is assessed on the same scale.
Note: The Writing Workshop rubrics I created were inspired by Ruth Culham and Beverly Ann Chin's wonderful book entitled 6 + 1 Traits of Writing: The Complete Guide, Grades 3 and Up (Scholastic Professional Books, 2003). These rubrics also appear in my book Eight Essentials for Empowered Teaching and Learning, K-8 (Corwin Press, 2008).
